Standards & Benchmarks Web Extras - Hardware MAIT, CompTIA in skill sets tie-up Our Bureau Bangalore Oct 12 MAIT, the apex body representing hardware, training and R&D sectors of the country’s IT industry, has tied up with Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), a global certification firm, to create a vendor-neutral platform for assessing and benchmarking IT skill sets. A memorandum of understanding to this effect was signed between MAIT Vice-President, Mr S.S. Raman, and the CompTIA CEO, Mr John Venator, on Friday. As part of the alliance, CompTIA will partner with IT training firms in India and offer certifications to IT professionals at various levels. The benchmarking will be through standardized examinations accredited and accepted by IT industry and vendors globally. CompTIA has issued more than one million certifications in over 165 countries. The National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council has identified IT as a key thrust area and the challenge is to address the issue of manpower requirements. “It is estimated that the electronics sector in India will create seven million direct jobs and another 15 million jobs indirectly by 2015. It will be a big challenge to get certified people to extent,” said Mr Vinnie Mehta, Executive Director, MAIT.
To identify the skill gaps in pan-electronics manufacturing and maintenance services, MAIT would be conducting a nationwide study, he said. The study to be completed in four months would also come up with suggestions to promote the electronics hardware industry, Mr Mehta said. “India’s technology base can only strengthen with the creation on an environment that encourages the application of new technologies, and sound knowledge management is one of the primary conditions in that process,” said Mr John Venator, President and CEO, CompTIA. CompTIA’s broad-based, foundational exams that validate an individual’s IT skill-set have been developed by global experts and industry leaders from the public and private sectors, including training, academia and Government.
