Infrastructure States - West Bengal AAI investing Rs 300 cr to develop small airports Somasroy Chakraborty Kolkata, Oct. 12 The Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to invest nearly Rs 200-300 crore over the next 18-24 months to develop small airports in eastern India. The proposed airports will cater to small aircrafts, mainly ATR aircrafts, and will be developed in places where there are unused airstrips. “Smaller airports are needed to improve connectivity and mobility. Currently, we are working on dead airstrips lying with us in Balurghat, Malda, Behala and Jharsuguda. Small airports will be developed in these places over the next one to one-and-half-years,” Mr S.P.S. Bakshi, Regional Executive Director – Eastern Region, AAI, told Business Line. “On an average, each airport will require investment of Rs 25-50 crore. These airports will cater to ATR type of aircrafts. This will be followed by similar airports in Barrackpore and Kanchrapara,” Mr Bakshi added. In Kanchrapara and Barrackpore, AAI will partner private players for airport development. The airports will be developed on lands owned by the Indian Air Force, which has agreed to hand it over to the State Government for civilian use.
