Petroleum Industry & Economy - Regulatory Bodies & Rulings ‘Gas production in K-G basin by June 2008’
Mr V.K. Sibal, Director General, DGH G. Naga Sridhar Hyderabad, Oct 12 There are no “hurdles” for commercial production of gas in K-G basin and it will start in June 2008, according to Mr V.K. Sibal, Director General, Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH). “About 40 wells are ready now with all facilities and about 80 million cubic feet production will take off in June 2008,” Mr Sibal told Business Line here. Mr Sibal was here to participate in the Foundation Day fete at National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI). The total estimated production capacity of K-G basin was in the tune of 150–200 tcf with about 100 wells, he said, adding: “It will make a big difference on the energy scenario of the country.” With K-G basin falling in line, the next focus of exploration activity would be on the Western part of the country, Mr Sibal said. “In fact about a 19 per cent of our geography has been used for proper exploration. There is still much to be done. The DGH has undertaken a survey to estimate total hydrocarbon potential in India by 2020. The exercise is on,” he added. “Over next one year about 400,000 sq km will be scanned for hydrocarbon resources. The biggest problem in oil and gas exploration is that there is no data. Efforts would be taken to build a data pool and integrate currently available data for optimal utilisation of resources,” he said. “To meet the growing energy requirements, at least 500 new wells have to be drilled in the next three years. With 100 wells coming up in K-G basin, another 400 wells remain to be drilled,” Mr Sibal explained. Exploration, drilling and commercialisation would go hand in hand, he added.
