US to introduce e-visa processing

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Oct 12

In a bid to facilitate visa processing for Indians to travel to the US, the US Embassy has decided to introduce paperless electronic visa processing service at all its consulates in the country. In addition, all customer service centres would also be equipped to receive biometric data which would ease the identity procedures for granting visas.

This was announced by Ms Maura Harty, Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Consular Affairs, Washington, at a meeting organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in India in the Capital on Thursday.

Responding to the query raised by Mr K.N. Memani, Chairman, AMCHAM, on the long waiting time during peak seasons and lack of sufficient consulates in South India, Ms Harty said that the Bureau of Consular Affairs had decided to open an office in Hyderabad to facilitate Indians in the region to travel to US. Meanwhile, in a statement issued here, the US Embassy said that in response to the recent appreciation of the rupee, the US consular sections in India would adjust the consular exchange rate from Rs 42 to Rs 40 to the US dollar, effective October 15.
