Health NACO, UNAIDS launch package for North East
AIDS initiative: The Minister for Labour, Mr Osacar Fernandes, with the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Ms. Panabaka Lakshmi, at the launch of joint programme on HIV and AIDS prevention and care in the North-East States in the Capital on Friday. Our Bureau, New Delhi, Oct. 12 National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), and the UNAIDS, the United Nations organisation working for the cause of AIDS, have launched a special programme for the North Eastern region of the country. A $8.9-million (Rs 34.85 crore) grant from the Australian Government will cover the four States of Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya and Mizoram under the five year programme. The Government of Sweden has contributed an additional fund of $0.65 million (Rs 2.54 crore). NACO also announced its first sub-office at Guwahati to increase State level interventions and local partnerships in the area. The programme was launched by Ms Panabaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare along with Mr Oscar Fernandes, Minister for Labour and Employment who is also Convener, Parliamentarians’ Forum on HIV/AIDS. “This is an important initiative with a strong vision and aim to control this epidemic in the Northeast. The commitment of the elected representatives from the region is demonstrated with the signing of the Guwahati declaration of 2005 and establishment of Legislative Forums in three States,” said Mr Fernandes The Australian High Commissioner, Mr John McCarthy, Mr Lars-Olof Lindgren, Ambassador, Embassy of Sweden, and the UN Resident Coordinator, Dr Maxine Olson, were also present on the occasion.
