Supply Chain Management Industry & Economy - Cars Allcargo Global launches car transportation containers Shubhra Tandon Allcargo Global Logistics is planning to launch Trans-Rak containers designed for transportation of cars by March 2008. The company plans to invest Rs 10 crore to bring out 200 containers. Addressing a press conference, Mr Ravi Jakhar, General Manager-New Projects of Allcargo Global, said: “Our product is designed keeping in mind the costs incurred by Indian auto companies at the transit level of the finished products.” Logistics SupportAllcargo claims that 10 per cent of all cars transported by roads in India suffer from damages ranging from minor to major. “The auto companies then also have to spend on inspection, repair and inventory of the damaged cars before they reach the market,” he said. As the mode of transportation would be the Railways, the company claims they would be charging auto companies 10 per cent less than what they pay as freight on road. Apart from giving container facility, the company also plans to provide end-to-end logistics support to auto companies by setting up rail-based logistics parks in Mumbai, National Capital Region (NCR), Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore in Phase I and II road-based facilities in Indore and Chennai. InvestmentsAccording to Mr Jakhar, total investments on the same would be in range of Rs 350 crore (inclusive of containers cost till March 2008) to be spent over a period of two years. “Commercial trials for the containers will begin by this month-end with Tata Motors and Maruti. We are looking at starting final commercial operations in NCR to Gujarat and NCR-Mumbai-Pune route and back by March,” he said. Freight TrainsThe customised car containers have been acquired from UK-based Trans-Rak International which has its manufacturing facility in China. As regards running freight trains, Allcargo would be partnering with one of the licence holders, which is likely to be finalised by December-end, he said. Trans-Rak containers have been designed in a way that they can also be used for carrying other commodities too. More Stories on : Supply Chain Management | Cars | New Products & Services
