Railways More demand for reefer containers
Competition hotting among players. Ever since the first private container train was launched by Bothra Shipping a little more than a year ago, as many as seven other firms including the public sector Central Warehousing Corporation have launched their services. Together with the Container Corporation of India (Concor), there are nine operators now with one more firm planning to start its services soon. In all, 15 private firms secured licences from the Railways to run the services and all the firms are exp ected to launch their services soon. Concor has the largest number of rakes, about 150 or so, while the maximum number of rakes that a private operator presently has is nine. From next year, when the private operators will have more rakes at their command, the competition will become intense and with it there might be pressure on rates also. One area which holds out promise is the movement of reefer containers. Now these containers are used mostly for handling exports, but soon they will be used for transporting imported cargo like fruits and fruit pulps also. Some of the foreign container majors are working on it. More importantly, with the cold chain set to expand, the domestic demand for reefer containers too would rise.
