Tiruchi, Vizag getting world class airports

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi, Oct 14 Visakhapatnam and Tiruchi are to soon get world class modern airports. Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to invite bids by the end of the month for not only commercial operation and maintenance of the terminal building but also develop, manage and operate the cargo facilities and undertake city side development at Visakhapatnam and Tiruchi airports.

Confirming the development, official sources told Business Line that the development of the two southern airports would be broadly on the lines being followed for the development of Amritsar and Udaipur airports.

Earlier this month, AAI called for Request for Quotation for outsourcing on a long-term basis the maintenance and commercial exploitation of the new terminal buildings at the two northern airports. The bidders have been asked to submit their proposals by the middle of next month.

A similar process is likely to be followed for the Visakhapatnam and Tiruchi airportsThe latest data available with AAI shows that in January this year Tiruchi saw a jump of 26 per cent at 20,533 passengers as compared to 16,267 passengers handled during the same period in the previous year.

Similarly, Visakhapatnam saw a rise of 13 per cent in passengers handled at 18,382 during March this year as compared to 16,207 handled during the same period in the previous year. In July Tiruchi recorded an 85.8 per cent increase in passengers handled at 33,125 (17,831).
