Human Resources Industry & Economy - Education Centre mulls aviation academy/MRO unit at existing Hyderabad airport Our Bureau New Delhi, Oct. 15 The Government plans to either set up an aviation academy or a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul centre at the existing Hyderabad airport which would close down when the new airport opens there next year, the Executive Director-Planning, Airports Authority of India, Mr G.K. Chaukiyal, said on Monday. “We are seeking legal opinion. Initially we were told that it would be okay to set up an MRO centre at the existing Hyderabad airport. Besides, the Government is also examining the option of setting up a flying college to provide training or an aviation university with support from the State Government,” Mr Chaukiyal said. As part of the modernisation of Bangalore and Hyderabad airports the Government had agreed to shut down the existing airports. Both the southern cities are to get new greenfield airports that are to open by the first quarter of next year. The AAI official was speaking at a seminar jointly organised by the UK Trade and Investment and British Airports Group on opportunities in the airport sector in India. Non-metro airportsThe Government, which has already awarded the contract for modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports, was also committed to completing the cityside development of 35 non-metro airports through the public-private partnership route by 2012, Mr Chaukiyal said. Addressing the seminar, a senior GMR official said the group was keen to develop Hyderabad into a domestic aviation hub and Delhi into an international aviation hub. The GMR group has won the mandate to modernise the two airports and has tied up with the managers of Frankfurt airport, Fraport as the joint venture partners for the Delhi project.
