Our Bureau Mumbai, Oct. 15 Tata Consultancy Services crossed the 1-lakh employee mark during the quarter ended September 2007, closing the period with a staff strength of 1,04,347. According to Mr S. Padmanabhan, Executive Director, Human Resources, TCS, the company is now the largest employer in the private sector in the country. Gross additions in the second quarter were 12,523. Of these, 5,899 were trainees, 5,658 experienced professionals, and 966 overseas recruits. Net employee additions were 9,268. The attrition rate for the period was 11.5 per cent, the lowest in the industry, he said. This rate is inclusive of the company’s BPO business. The employee utilisation rate was sustained at 79 per cent. The proportion of women employees with the company has increased to 28 per cent. Foreign nationals constitute 8.5 per cent of the company’s employee strength. IGNITE programmeThe IGNITE programme of the company, which seeks to employ science graduates and train them up intensively over seven months, has begun to show results, with 500 such graduates having joined TCS, Mr Padmanabhan said. Although wage hikes had a negative 117 basis point impact on the company’s margins for the quarter (from the immediate previous quarter), productivity increases would make up for that, said Mr S. Mahalingam, Chief Financial Officer, TCS.
