Hyderabad, Oct. 15

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Monday directed the Roads and Buildings Department officials to complete the carpeting work of all damaged roads in the State immediately.

This follows a review meeting the Chief Minister had with the department officials on Monday.

Reviewing the maintenance works in the State, the Chief Minister said that highest ever budget provision of Rs 2,161 crore was made in 2007-2008 for roads and buildings out of which a sum of Rs 1,250 crore was released so far, and Rs 986 crore spent.

Potholes on rise

The Chief Minister said that the increased allocation and budgetary provision should invariably reflect in better quality of roads. He, however, felt that along with the budget increase, the number of potholes on the roads has also increased.

Dr Reddy directed that all State roads should be carpeted before the end of this financial year and expressed that the expenditure for all new roads and buildings works should be met from the next year budget.

Later, addressing a press conference, Dr Reddy said that from a situation when the prices of paddy and wheat were on parity, a few years ago, this has changed with wheat commanding higher prices compared to paddy.
