Power States - Andhra Pradesh AP seeks more power from Central pool Our Bureau Hyderabad, Oct. 16 With the demand-supply mismatch going up in the power sector due to increasing usage, especially in the winter months, the Andhra Pradesh Government has sought the Central Government support in allocating additional power to the South and the State in particular. The State Minister for Energy and Coal, Mr Mohd Ali Shabbir, who recently interacted with the Union Power Minister, Mr Sushil Kumar Shinde, sought additional power from the Central pool for the State to save on crucial hydel power during winter months. In a letter addressed to the Power Minister and as a follow-up to the discussionswith the Centre, Mr Ali requested pooling of power from the 365-MW Kayamkulam power station of NTPC together with special allocations to Kerala (180 MW) and to Tamil Nadu (155 MW) from the unallocated portion of Talcher in the eastern region. This additional power was sought as the unallocated power could be shared in proportion with shortages in the southern region. The southern grid has been operating below 49 hertz for about 52.5 per cent of the time in the last few days. The low frequency operation was due to overdrawal by States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Andhra Pradesh is now required to draw 500 MW more than that allocated from Central generating stations even after running the existing gas stations with costly fuel naphtha and expending hydel power.
