Textiles ‘Technical textiles market set to grow’ Our Bureau Mumbai, Oct 17 The Indian technical textiles market is expected to reach Rs 36,000 crore ($9 billion) by 2007-08, said Mr E.V.K.S. Elangovan, State Minister for Textiles, at ‘The Link With India’ conference of non-woven textiles organised by US based Association of the Non-woven Fabrics Industry (INDA). The current share of the Indian technical textiles market is 6 per cent of the Rs 4.28 lakh crore ($107 billion) global market. Indicating that non-woven technical textiles have in the recent years become one of the most important, potential and promising segments of textiles application, Mr Shankar Singh Vaghela, Union Minister for Textiles, said: “An expert committee on technical textiles has been constituted and centres of excellence relating to technical textiles with the association of industry and research institutions are on the anvil.” Enabling PartnershipsMr Seshadri Ramkumar, Co-Chairman of INDA India Committee, pegs the per capita consumption of non-wovens in India at less than 0.1 kilogram and predicts growth in areas of geo-textiles, automotive, medical and consumer wipe industries in the near future. “The Government has given us the assurance that it will help promote medical and geo-textiles and we plan to build an international centre with educational institutions in India to promote, research and develop products. The Government is willing to give Rs 10 crore ($2.5 million) for the project,” said Mr Ramkumar. More Stories on : Textiles
