Water States - Kerala Pollution board fiat to KWA Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 17 The Kerala State Pollution Control Board has directed the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) not to give permission for further sewage connections to existing sewage service systems in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. The directive is in the wake of the observation that KWA is maintaining partial sewerage systems in these cities, with about 20 per cent coverage of area in Thiruvananthapuram and about five per cent in Kochi. The board, in a statement here on Wednesday, said it has come to its notice that KWA has been giving permission to hotels, hospitals, apartments and similar facilities to discharge sewage into the existing systems far in excess of their present capacity. This has resulted in overflow of sewage from pump-houses and manholes. In Thiruvananthapuram, KWA has no sewage treatment system and the sewage collected is directly used for growing fodder grass without any treatment. In Kochi, even though there is a treatment system, it is heavily overloaded and is not functioning satisfactorily. The board has pointed out that huge amount of ground, surface and sub-surface water pollution has been caused by the untreated and under-treated sewage discharge in these areas, posing a major health hazard.
