Tax collection in AP shows mixed trend

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Oct. 17 First half this fiscal was witness to a mixed performance by various departments in the State with some like the Mining Department managing to step up tax collections marginally, while others unable to achieve projected targets.

The Andhra Pradesh Mining Department registered buoyant growth during the period with the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, complimenting them for the achievement.

Dr Reddy, while lauding some of the State departments for achieving targets, directed some other departments (which have not managed to achieve targeted amounts) to plug loopholes in the system to ensure higher revenue collections.

For the first six months ended September 30, 2007, the total mineral revenue was Rs 681.77 crore against Rs 680.75 crore in the corresponding period last year.

Dept-wise data

Reviewing the performance of the Mines and Geology Department, the Chief Minister observed that Rs 210.24 crore was achieved against the target of Rs 182.25 crore from coal, Rs 53.33 crore from crude oil and gas compared to the target of Rs 63 crore.

While sand logged Rs 55.93 crore, Rs 104.41 crore was from non-fuel major minerals and Rs 305 crore from minor minerals.

In related development, the Commercial Taxes Department recorded collections of Rs 9,159 crore against Rs 9,678 crore, which was just about 94.63 per cent of that achieved last year. According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, revenue collections from the Transport Department were Rs 753.13 crore against the target of Rs 835.51 crore.
