New Hyderabad airport to be opened on March 16

Hyderabad, Oct. 18 Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, being developed by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), will commence commercial operations on March 16, 2008.

Ms Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of UPA’s National Advisory Council, is likely to inaugurate the airport.The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has written to Ms Gandhi to inaugurate the Greenfield airport.

Public-private partnership

The 5,400-acre airport is being developed in a public-private partnership, with GMR group holding the majority stake (63 per cent). While Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad holds 11 per cent, Airports Authority of India and Andhra Pradesh Governments have 13 per cent stake each.

At a review meeting here on Thursday, officials told the Chief Minister that works on passenger terminal building, airside landside, airfield pavements and runway were completed beyond 90 per cent last month. The Chief Minister asked the officials to speed up work to complete all approach roads and flyovers, leading to the Shamshabad airport.

In the first phase, it could handle 12 million passengers, while the latter phase would be taken up to handle 40 million passengers a year, a Government release said.
