APSRTC to hike fares

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Oct. 18 This Vijaya Dasami brings no good news for bus commuters in Andhra Pradesh. The State-run Road Transport Corporation has announced that it will soon hike bus fares.

However, passengers in rural areas (those using Palle Velugu buses that constitute the majority of the fleet) would be spared.

Though he kept mum on from when the fare hike would come into force, Mr V. Dinesh Reddy, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of APRSRTC, told reporters here that there was no major fare hike in the last four years.

The prices of diesel and other inputs have gone up significantly, putting a heavy burden on the corporation. The corporation also announced major addition to the fleet.

The APSRTC’s board would take a call on the fare hike in its meeting slated for early next week.

The corporation buses carried 1.34 crore passengers a day as against 1.28 crore last year. For the first time in 10 years, it registered a surplus of Rs 40.59 crore during the financial year ended March 31, 2007.
