Biocon gets nod to market breast cancer drug

Bangalore, Oct. 18 Biocon Ltd said it has received the Drug Controller-General of India’s approval to market Abraxane, a breast cancer drug developed and licensed to it for commercialisation by US company Abraxis BioScience, Inc.

Biocon’s Chairman and Managing Director, Ms Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, said the drug would be launched during the January-March 2008 quarter. Biocon applied for approval in July this year.

Biocon has the right to market Abraxane in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UAE and will share royalties from its sales with the US partner.

The global revenue for Abraxane touched $175 million in the first phase of its launch. Globally it has been gaining ground in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer.

The drug is nanoparticles-based, albumin-bound paclitaxel. It will help affordable access to cancer therapy in the country, according to Biocon. Citing IMS data, it said between February and September 2006, it grew 64 per cent compared to an overall 11 per cent rise in the taxane market. The drug is being tested globally on other cancers.

The company’s first cancer product, BIOMAb EGFR, was launched a year ago for head and neck cancer patients. According to Mr Rakesh Bamzai, President-Marketing, Biomab in one year has seen a record 800 patients registering.Dr Shrikumar Suryanarayan has relinquished his responsibilities as President R&D with effect from October, 1 and has been inducted to Biocon’s Scientific Advisory Board. Dr Harish Iyer, General Manager R&D, succeeds him.
