Occupational health

The article “Occupational Health and Safety” (Business Line, October 19) was timely and well-written.

The issues of occupational health and safety norms are being largely ignored by most entrepreneurs and corporates, big and small.

Driven mainly by the profit motive, vital issues that affect society as a whole are not looked at seriously enough.

Prudent financial analysts know that these (poor health and unsafe working conditions) are at the cost of quality of both internal and external factors and can erode profitability.

The governments, both at the Centre and the States should address these core issues of occupational health and safety hazards.

Prevention is better than cure is an age-old maxim. Allowing the hazards a free run could make it costlier to fight them.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is also vital to keep society healthy and help people live an honourable life.

Proper occupational health and safety norms should be established and an effective machinery set up to enforce them, lest we find our society crippled beyond repair too soon.
