Port development

The Kollam port was dedicated to the nation on October 19 by the Kerala Chief Minister, Mr V. S. Achuthanandan.

It is a landmark event, paving the way for developing waterways.

“The Kerala Government has initiated steps to develop five more ports in the State, apart from the international container trans-shipment terminal at Vizhinjam” (Business Line, October 20).

It may be still better if the coastal States join together to draw yp an integrated plan to develop minor ports on both the coasts of India. It could make transport of goods cheaper and help trade to flourish.

To start with, at least Kerala and Tamil Nadu could co-operate in this regard.
