Under the project, the centres in one lakh villages will be broadband Internet enabled. The centres will cater to six lakh villages in the country — at least one CSC in a cluster of six villages, says information available in the Ministry of Information Technology Web site. T.E. Raja Simhan Chennai, Oct. 21 Leading companies such as Reliance, ICICI and TVS have shown interest in rolling out the Common Service Centres (CSC) in 5,400 villages across Tamil Nadu to provide various information, communication and technology-enabled services, according to the Tamil Nadu IT Secretary, Dr C. Chandramouli. The newly created Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency has been appointed as a nodal agency for the implementation of the programme, which was formulated by the Department of Information Technology, Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. Tamil Nadu has been divided into five zones, with one company allowed to bid for a maximum of four zones. This means there will be at least two companies implementing the project, he told Business Line on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the Indo-Australian Chamber of Commerce. The project is for a minimum of four years. Last year, the centre announced that nationally around 100,000 rural CSCs will be set up at a total cost of Rs 5,742 crore. Of this, the Union Government’s outlay will be Rs 856 crore and the State governments’ share Rs 793 crore. The balance amount of Rs 4,093 crore is expected to come from the private sector. Under the project, the centres in one lakh villages will be broadband Internet enabled and would offer government-to-citizen and business-to-customer services. The Government is putting in place necessary arrangements to provide reliable broadband connectivity (of 256 Kbps) up to the CSC level. The centres will cater to six lakh villages in the country — at least one CSC in a cluster of six villages, says information available in the Ministry of Information Technology Web site. The centres are expected to create one lakh direct jobs and 2-3 lakh additional indirect jobs. The scheme, when fully operational, will help people enjoy higher disposable income by reducing time and costs in obtaining Government and private services, and through enhanced employment opportunities available digitally.
