Trade & Labour Unions Skoda employees protest current wage settlement Mayur N. Shah Mumbai, Oct. 22 Permanent employees of Skoda Auto India’s Aurangabad facility have struck work demanding a pay revision. “The non-performance (strike) of these employees is primarily due to a dispute between the workers and the management over the current wage settlement,” said Dr Kangoo, member of the general council and working committee, All-India Trade Union Congress and secretary of the Communist party, Maharashtra State Council. Mr Deepak Dogra, DGM – HR & Admin, Skoda Auto India, however said that these employees have been laid off as they have not signed the ‘Good Conduct Undertaking’ demanded of these employees by the company. The company has appealed to the members of the Skoda Auto Employees Union to sign the undertaking, he added. Dispute over outputAccording to State Government sources, the permanent employees are protesting against the decision of the management to setting the same level of daily output achieved with the help of temporary staff when such labour has been dispensed with. For the past two years, the company has been churning out 40 vehicles daily. Since last six months new employees were recruited temporarily due to high demand for Skoda vehicles. Hence production increased from 40 to 60 vehicles a day. On the termination of these temporary workmen a section of the permanent staff have scaled down the output leading to the present labour dispute. The Skoda management reacted by primarily cutting down the wages of these 100 permanent people. Furthermore, nine people were suspended; four leaders including the president of the Skoda Employees Union have been off duty as of date. A new wage settlement is due in 2008. The facility is scheduled to turn out the forthcoming Fabia (mid-size sedan) model besides the assembly of Audi A6 which is also the cards. The Volkswagen Passat is currently being assembled here.
