Our Bureau Kolkata, Oct. 23 ITC Ltd on Tuesday signed an MoU with the Government of Nagaland and the Spices Board for development of the famed Naga chilli through a host of initiatives across the agri-value chain. Under the MoU, ITC will undertake to develop a spice crop (Naga chillies being the first) in the identified regions, deploying modern agricultural practices. In the first phase, the States of Nagaland, Manipur and Sikkim will be covered and the MoU will gradually be extended to other North-Eastern States. According to an official release, the MoU covers crop development programmes to improve quality and farm productivity, farm extension services, deployment of customised infrastructure and market development activities. Post harvest practices to preserve the product quality, farmer training and development of organic spices are also part of the MoU, which was signed in the presence of the Union Minister of State for Commerce, Mr Jairam Ramesh, and the ITC Chairman, Mr Y.C. Deveshwar. The signatories were Mr V.J.Kurien, Chairman, Spices Board, Ms Tangi Mannen, Commissioner and Secretary, Department of Horticulture, Nagaland, and Mr S. Janardhan Reddy, CEO of ITC’s ILTD Division. The implementation will be through partner NGOs, which will in turn mobilise self-help groups (SHGs) to collect the produce from the growers and undertake grading and primary processing. ITC will procure the spices produced under the programme, and as the scale and scope of the project increases, domestic and export markets and value addition facilities too will be developed.
