Stringent action planned against illegal water connections

‘Consumer cards’ to be issued to drinking water users

“ As part of the move, the Kerala Water Supply and Sewerage Act would be amended.”

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 23

The State Government is planning stringent action against illegal exploitation of drinking water.

As part of the move, the Kerala Water Supply and Sewerage Act would be amended, the Minister for Water Resources, Mr N.K. Premachandran, said here on Tuesday. He said that the Government would introduce ‘consumer cards’ to drinking water consumers and also take steps to cancel illegal connections.

The consumer cards would help collect the details about the consumers and this was necessary to make the amendment of the Act more effective.

The Minister was inaugurating a one-day workshop organised by the Kerala Water Authority. The Water Authority had detected several illegal connections in the course of random checks carried out in urban and rural areas. It was found out that millions of litres of water had been siphoned away through these means.

The introduction of consumer cards would put a stop to these illegal connections. The Water Authority, while mounting a drive against this, should also strive to increase its revenue, the Minister said.

He opined that a much improved water distribution system could be ensured if an integrated package had been jointly worked by the ‘Sujala’ project of the Centre and the Kerala Water Authority.

The most important thing was to see to it that the consumers were supplied germs-free pure drinking water, he said.
