Bangalore, Oct. 23

Cookson Electronics on Tuesday announced the opening of its research and development centre here that will support the company’s efforts to expand its market for innovative materials used in electronic assembly processes.

Its application covers the entire range of electronics such as telecom, consumer electronics, power and semiconductors.

The US headquartered company with a manufacturing facility in Ambattur in Chennai has invested $10 million its new facility which will have 50 scientists and professionals for R&D. For over three years, the company been engaged in a collaborative research arrangement with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Mr Corbett said Asia-Pacific now accounted for 60 per cent of its assembly materials business and, “with India and China as emerging markets we wanted a research base in the region.”

Mr Bawa Singh, Chief Technology Officer, said the India centre will play a significant role in evolving technology and materials for nano-applications in electronic appliances. With Chennai emerging as a major electronics manufacturing service centre, Cookson saw a synergy with its R&D centre in Bangalore to reduce the product development time.

Cookson’s revenue at $16-20 million has been growing at 25 per cent in India, though the country had only relatively small share compared to its APAC sales which accounted for more than half of its overall revenue.
