Opinion - Letters
Farm potential

The editorial “Focus on the farm” (Business Line, October 23) was indeed an informative and timely input for policy-makers, administrators, management consultants and NGOs. For too long has the agriculture sector been grossly neglected.

Rural and national development through farm growth must become natural in the Indian context.

The low farm productivity levels, unbalanced and grossly low per-hectare consumption levels of fertilisers and other agro- inputs (compared even to neighbouring Pakistan) should be a matter of great concern requiring urgent remedies.

The vast potential of Rural India is largely untapped with vast waste-lands unutilised. Government strategies, particularly in respect of development of horticulture and sericulture have so far been inadequate. Rural marketing needs a new focus and drive from both Central and State Governments, as also from corporates and MNCs.

A special drive is also needed to develop on a large scale organic fertilisers and pesticides such as neem-based control products, which can boost sustainable agricultural practices.

There could be several positive ripple effects and benefits for the country from widespread agricultural development, including increased employment potential, higher availability of raw materials for industry and reining in the price line for essential commodities.

In addition, a more vibrant farm sector has a positive impact on several social and political tensions and in arresting migration to cities and towns with the attendant problems and issues, as rightly pointed by the editorial.
