Co-operatives States - Tamil Nadu ‘TN neglecting agriculture, rural development banks’ Our Bureau Coimbatore, Oct. 24 At the call of the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Bank Employees’ Association, employees working in 22 out of 23 District Central Co-operative Banks, Tamil Nadu Co-operative State Agriculture and Rural Development Bank, and 180 Primary Agriculture and Rural Development Banks, struck work on Wednesday to draw the attention of the State Government to their woes. The General Secretary of the TNCBEA, Mr P. Balakrishnan, in a communication, alleged that the Government is neglecting the agriculture and rural development banks. “If only the Government had released funds to enable these banks to recommence the loaning operations for infrastructure development in agriculture, their operations would not have come to a grinding halt. The Government’s negligence in extending financial assistance would lead to a collapse of these institutions,” he said and urged immediate assistance. He also stressed the need for initiating techno-based services in these banks to improve their service levels, caused by acute manpower shortage. Further, wage revision was effected in 17 out of the 23 District Central Co-operative Banks. “No revision was effected for the employees on the rolls of the remaining 6 DCCBs as they were loss making entities. This is unjust as the losses are incurred only due to Government inaction and intrusion in collection and disbursement of loans,” Mr Balakrishnan said, and stressed the need for extending the revision. He alleged that the managements of the Primary Agriculture and Rural Development Banks of withholding the terminal benefits of the retirees from 2004.
