Roadways States - Tamil Nadu States - Kerala Kerala, TN renew transport pact Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 26 Kerala and Tamil Nadu Governments have signed the seventh supplementary inter-State transport agreement defining the routes that the State-owned transport corporations can ply in each other’s territory as also improvement in the facilities for passengers. As per the agreement signed here on Friday, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will be able to ply an additional 4,232.4 km in Tamil Nadu over and above the existing 28,784 km. In the case of Tamil Nadu, the State-owned State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) will be entitled to ply a distance of 4,226.6 km in Kerala in addition to the present 28,802 km. The agreement was signed by the officials of the two governments in the presence of the Kerala Minister for Transport, Mr Mathew T. Thomas, and his Tamil Nadu counterpart, Mr V.N. Nehru. Mr Thomas said that the agreement would facilitate introduction of more bus services to Nagercoil via Kaliakkavila, Tenkasi via Shencottah, Teni via Kumili, Coimbatore via Palakkad and Sulthanbathery via Guddalore. The inter-State transport agreement between the two States was first signed on June 30, 1976, which was followed by six supplementary agreements in 1979, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985 and 1999. The objectives of the arrangement include improvement in travel facilities of the inter-State passengers, bringing in changes in the existing routes and starting of stage carriage services on new routes. Mr Thomas said that he suggested that the governments should go in for a comprehensive agreement instead of entering into supplementary agreements subsequently. The two sides agreed that the present accord would be reviewed within a year and the next agreement would not be a supplementary one. More Stories on : Roadways | Tamil Nadu | Kerala
