New Projects Industry & Economy - Power States - Tamil Nadu
Our Bureau Chennai, Oct 26 Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board today announced the setting up of a joint venture company to put up a 1,600-MW thermal power plant at Udangudi, near Tuticorin, southern Tamil Nadu. Twenty per cent of the investment of Rs 8,500 crore will be the equity portion. The two promoters will have 26 per cent stake in the company. The rest of the equity will come from financial institutions, it was announced at a press conference here today. The project will come up in two units of 800 MW each, designed with supercritical technology. (Supercritical boilers are those that operate at very high pressures, leading to more heat generation for the same amount of fuel.) The first of the two will be operational by the end of the 11th Plan period, the Chairman and Managing Director of BHEL, Mr A.K. Puri, said at the press conference. This is the first order for supercritical boilers for BHEL, which sources the supercritical technology from Alsthom. Tiruchi expansionMr Puri said that the public sector engineering giant would spend Rs 1,000 crore on expanding its boiler manufacturing capacities at Tiruchi. When the project is completed by 2009, BHEL would be able to supply power equipment for 15,000 MW per annum, compared with 6,000 MW at present. This, of course, would not be enough to meet the growing power demands of the country. More Stories on : New Projects | Power | Tamil Nadu | Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd
