Cultivation States - Tamil Nadu Caution on Bengal gram, cumbu prices Our Bureau Coimbatore, Oct. 28 Farmers planning to raise Bengal gram, cumbu and coriander during October-November season in Tamil Nadu have been cautioned on moderate price forecasts for these crops during their harvest in February-March next. The Tamilnadu Agricultural University’s domestic and export market intelligence cell (DEMIC) said farmers who prefer to sow Bengal gram using the Oct-Nov wet spell should anticipate a lower price of Rs 2,700-Rs 2800 per quintal as against the current market rates of Rs 2,900. The prevailing high price is due to festival season and local demands of this important pulse are partly met by supplies from neighbouring States including Karnataka. As for millets, the area under cumbu may go down because of the farmers’ preference for maize crop in the rainfed tract. The price of the crop during January-March harvest season may rule marginally lower at Rs 600-Rs 650 per quintal as compared to the current market price of Rs 700. But it may go up to Rs 650-Rs 750 per quintal during April-May when arrivals would halt in the market. In the case of coriander, the anticipated price of the crop during its harvest in January-March would be below the current market price of Rs 700 per quintal and it is anticipated to quote at Rs 650-Rs 750 per quintal during April-May.
