Kerala PSUs under Agri Dept do well

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 28 The public sector undertakings under the Agriculture Department of the Kerala Government have significantly improved their performance of late.

At a review meeting here, presided over by the Agriculture Minister, Mr Mullakkara Ratnakaran, it was revealed that the PSUs had collectively earned a profit of Rs 45 crore in 2006-07.

The Kerala Kerakarshaka Sahakarana Federation (Kerafed), which was drifting into loss, managed to post an operational profit of Rs 2 crore during the year.

The company was able to sell 7,000 tonnes of coconut oil as against 3,000 tonnes in 2005-06 and this is expected to reach 10,000 tonnes in the current year.

The Minister said that the work on the company’s new factories for manufacture of desiccated coconut and coconut cream were being completed and they would be commissioned this year itself. Besides, a Rs 1.12-crore project for packaging and marketing of tender coconut water had been finalised.

Other units

Another PSU, Oil Palm India Ltd, returned a profit of more than Rs 12 crore in 2006-07. The company has now initiated a project for extraction of oil from seeds.

Similarly, Kerala State Farming Corporation made its highest ever profit of Rs 13 crore during the year.

The Kerala Agro Machinery Corporation Ltd, which was hitherto engaged in the manufacture of tillers, has now entered the manufacture of tractors.

The company made a profit of Rs 8.75 crore in 2006-07.

The Minister said that Kerala Agro Industries Corporation Ltd had now started making profit after having been in the red for years.

The company would now shift its focus from its traditional activities to the area of food processing, he said.
