Service sector is like protein to the body. As a major contributor to the economy, it has helped lift the other sectors such as agriculture and industry, said Mr N.R. Harihara Krishnan, Assistant General Manager-Commercial, State Bank of India, Madurai.

He was delivering the valedictory address at the one-day national seminar on ‘Challenges and opportunities in the service sector’, organised by the Department of Management Studies, Fatima Collge, under the aegis of Business Line Club, here.

Mr Krishnan said as a service sector, banking has been playing a significant role in raising the gross domestic product through funding many capital projects and expanding the opportunities for employment. One can be a manager or a leader in these fields. Success requires both managerial talents and leadership qualities. Integrity and discipline in the personality count most. Sound character and a positive attitude along with good communication skills and adaptability are necessary, he stressed.

Mr B.T. Bangera, Managing Director, Hi-Tech Arai Ltd, Madurai, inaugurated earlier the seminar and stressed in his address, on the need to develop a global perspective in a competitive environment with enhanced quality component, both in the individuals and the organisations to succeed.

In the technical sessions, while Mr K. Prabhaharan, Branch Manager, New India Assurance Ltd, elucidated on Indian insurance scenario, Mr A.K. Sivakumar, Principal, Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre, Madurai, and Mr Hari Govind Tilak, Senior Manager, Hexaware Technologies, Chennai, dealt with health care and information technology respectively.

Mr C. Narayanasami, Assistant Regional General Manager, The Hindu, was present.
