Bangalore, Oct. 29

Only six companies have won this award since its inception more than a decade ago, while many have figured in the three other levels signifying various milestones that the organisations could aim for as they progress their journey towards the coveted CII-Exim Bank Award for Excellence.

This year’s winner would be announced during the two-day 15th CII Quality Summit beginning here on November 1, raising aspirants from among 50 organisations evaluated by a team of 250 assessors to covet the honour.

The fact that senior corporate executives are part of an assessment team, which itself has undergone training from the CII-Quality Institute, underlines the objective of adding intrinsic value to the Excellence Award. The assessor themselves can act as catalyst to spreading quality movement in their organisations by imparting their learnings, said Mr K.N. Shenoy, Chairman of CII Institute of Quality.

Setting standards

The Excellence Model is based on the standards and practices found in the international quality awards, such as the European Foundation for Quality Management. It gives emphasis on organisations to strengthen their management systems, practices and capabilities to enhance, and sustain their competitiveness to become world class organisations. Emphasis is also given to responsiveness to the stakeholders interests.

Tata group companies have won the honour three times, while Maruti Udyog Ltd, Infosys Technologies and Hewlett Packard (India) Ltd were other peers to figure in the hall of fame.

However, none of them were able to qualify for the ultimate peerage in their first attempt, though Tata Group companies and the Bharat Heavy Electricals units have figured the maximum number of times in three other levels leading up to the Excellence Award.

Mr S.K. Kakkar, Principal Counsellor and Head, CII Institute of Quality, is working towards evolving a next level of award for corporations, which have won the Excellence Award once and cannot participate for five years.

This should act as an impetus to attain higher levels of quality through innovative processes and systems, he pointed out.
