Kolkata, Oct. 29

An IT products-specific SEZ being set up by R.P. Infosystems Pvt Ltd, manufacturers of the Chirag brand of personal computers, at Baruipur on the outskirts of Kolkata at a total investment of Rs 1,025 crore will be fully operational within the next two years.

This was stated by Mr Kaustav Roy, Chairman of R.P. Infosystems, at a function held here on Monday to mark the launch of ‘Chirag Power Play’ range of laptops. The laptop range was unveiled by the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Mr Roy said that of the 46 acres of land required for the project, 30 acres have already been acquired. Computer cabinets, cases, keyboards, mouse, motherboards, LCD monitors, etc., would be manufactured at the SEZ with technology obtained from Chinese and Taiwanese companies.

China, Taiwan

Besides manufacturing components for meeting the company’s in-house requirements, components for other OEM brands and for the assembled PC segment would also be manufactured. Equity would be offered to the Chinese and Taiwanese companies for technology support obtained from them.

The company launched five laptop models under the ‘Chirag Power Play’ brand. They have been priced in the Rs 23,990-35,990 range. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said West Bengal had inherent strengths in the software arena while companies in China and Taiwan had expertise in the hardware domain. IT companies in the State could well forge tie-ups with such Chinese and Taiwanese companies and set up computer hardware manufacturing facilities in West Bengal, he said.

R.P. Infosystems has targeted a turnover of Rs 500 crore during the year ending March 31, 2008, against Rs 170.19 crore recorded in 2006-07, according to Mr Roy.
