UP Govt fixes cane price at Rs 125-130

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Oct. 31 Even as sugar millers in Uttar Pradesh (UP) have got a partial reprieve from the Courts on the cane arrears front, they have been dealt a fresh setback.

The State Government under Ms Mayawati, on Tuesday, fixed (‘advised’) a price of Rs 125 per quintal for normal cane and Rs 130 per quintal for early maturity varieties during the 2007-08 crushing season (October - September).

These prices — announced in the State Assembly by the Minister for Sugarcane, Mr Naseemuddin Siddique — are the same as the levels fixed for the previous 2006-07 season. The difference, however, is that sugar prices are now ruling way below last year.

Falling realisations have, in turn, meant that mills have not been able to make full cane payments even for 2006-07.

As on October 18, private mills in UP owed growers Rs 1,122.11 crore out of the total Rs 9,091.94 crore worth of cane bought during the season.
