Trinamool Congress-led protest disrupts normal life in Kolkata

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Oct. 31 Normal life in West Bengal was affected for 12 hours between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday following the Trinamool Congress leader Ms Mamata Banerjee’s call to bring the State to a “standstill” for 12 hours in protest against the incidents in Nandigram and in support of her demand for restoration of “rule of law” in the State.

Stray incidents of violence were reported even as about 700 people were arrested, according to Mr Prasad Ranjan Ray, Home Secretary of West Bengal. Almost all commercial establishments and shops were closed and offices reported very thin attendance.

Taxis and buses off the road

Transport services were affected with most taxis and private buses staying off the road. Some government buses, however, plied on their normal routes. Train services on both Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway were affected. Several long-distance trains were stranded at different stations due to obstruction by supporters of the agitation. Several long-distance trains had to be terminated before they could reach their final destination.

Air services to and from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport were, however, not affected. A Jet Airways official said the airline’s morning flights to Delhi and Mumbai were packed to capacity and no flights were cancelled during the day. A spokesperson of Air India said all flights were more or less on schedule and load factors were comparable with any “normal day”.
