The Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) here has achieved self-reliance in warship technologies and is in a position to supply the Indian Navy the kind of products and devices needed to realise its full operational capabilities, said Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Controller of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

He was speaking at NSTL on Wednesday evening after handing over warship products developed by the lab to Vice-Admiral D.S.P. Varma, Chief of Materials at the Naval headquarters.

Dr Pilliai said NSTL had earlier developed and handed over torpedoes, helicopter fire control systems, advanced mines and several other systems to the Navy.

“The devices being handed over today, such as acoustic silencers and camouflage screens, enable warships and submarines to move stealthily and they are of great importance to the enhancement of our naval capabilities. Thirty years of hard work by dedicated scientists has culminated in the development of these products,” he said.

Dr V. Bhujanga Rao, Director of the NSTL, said the lab was involved in developing technologies and products useful in evading detection by enemy ships and submarines.

Some of the products developed are acoustic enclosures, acoustic silencers, double stage vibration isolation systems, radar transportation ladder, stanchions, camouflage screens, and composite blowers.

After extensive laboratory and shipboard evaluations, these products were accepted for induction into the Navy.

Vice-Admiral Varma said the Navy, the NSTL and the industry, both private and public, should work together to make the Indian Navy an unbeatable force.

Dr S. Chinamanikyam, Additional Director of NSTL, explained the features of the warship products handed over to the Navy.
