Bangalore, Oct. 31 The Coffee Board’s post-blossom production estimate of 2.91 lakh tonnes for the 2007-08 season could be down marginally due to excess rainfall received in the growing areas under the influence of south-west monsoon.

The Coffee Board Chairman, Mr G.V. Krishna Rau, said several coffee growing locations had received excess rainfall accompanied by winds within a short span of 7-10 days.

“Such high precipitation caused significant damage to coffee in certain high rainfall- prone locations in Karnataka and Kerala. Owing to this production estimates could come down when we revisit coffee farms for making final crop estimates,” he said.

The estimates are likely to be around the first week of December.

The production estimates for 2006-07 were pegged at 2.88 lakh tonnes but current export trends indicate that it may be marginally lower. “It is a bit early to have a final inference on this,” Mr Rau said.
