Rlys to set up Chhapra wheel production unit

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov. 1 Indian Railways has decided to set up its wheel plant in Chhapra as a Railway production unit to be manned by its officials. Earlier, it had explored the provision of setting up the unit on a public-private partnership basis, however it did not get a response from more than one company.

“Since there was interest from one technology provider only, there were issues of lack of competition. Thus, the Ministry has decided to take up the project as another production unit under itself ,” said sources. Following this, a turnkey tender was invited by the Railways, and the project is being handled by the Hajipur division. It is for handling the turnkey project (of constructing a wheel plant with about one-lakh wheels per annum capacity) that Larsen and Toubro, and Tatas have submitted bids.
