Our Bureau Pune, Nov. 5 Workers at Bajaj Auto Ltd’s Akurdi plant, who were directed to stay at home and get their wages for the last couple of months, will be permitted entry inside the company premises beginning November 7. There is no clarity, however, on what work they will be given, since the management is emphatic that two-wheeler production, ceased since September 1, will be resumed. The tentative resolution to the standoff between the workers and the management announced on Monday appears to be the result of a series of meetings held by the Union Agriculture Minister Mr Sharad Pawar, the agitating workers and the BAL management. Mr Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, BAL, was present at today’s meeting. “The workers will be allowed inside starting with the first shift on Wednesday,” Mr Pawar said, clarifying however, that there was no discussion with regard to re-start of production at Akurdi. This step would help establish mutual confidence, and set the stage for further discussions between workers’ representatives and the management, he said, adding that the issue be resolved by the two parties after Diwali. A week ago, Mr Bajaj had said that the company had not stopped any of the workers from entering the premises as long as they did not insist that production be resumed. “They can play cards, carrom or paint or chat,” he had said. Around 1,650 workers had said that they were being denied entry. Mr Bajaj declined to comment on that today.
