IT, banking majors joining Assocham as patron members

Deepak Goel

New Delhi, Nov. 5 Some of the biggest IT, telecom and banking heavyweights are queuing up to join industry chamber Assocham, perceived to be the smallest of the three national industry bodies.

Major companies in the IT and telecom space joining the chamber as patron members are Microsoft (India), Idea Cellular, Ericsson India nd Hughes Communications. Those in the banking sector becoming such members include Barclays Bank Plc, Bank of Baroda and Shinsei Bank Group. Patron members are those who take part in the decision making process of the chamber.

Raising membership

“The extraordinary general meeting of the chamber held recently decided to raise the number of such membership to 150 from 100 earlier,” said Mr V.N. Dhoot, President, Assocham.

Real estate firms are not behind with a host of them becoming patrons. Others who are joining the chamber include JSW Energy Ltd, Monnet Ispat and Energy Ltd, DCW Ltd and Bateman Engineering India Pvt Ltd. With these companies, the total number of patron members of the chamber has shot up to 129.

Interestingly, the chamber had just 25 patron members in April 2004. Some of the largest companies in the country, including Reliance Industries, have since joined the chamber in the recent past.

The number of corporate members has also gone up by 250 in the last four months to a total of 1,800.
