Kadapa to get R&D lab for animal husbandry

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Nov. 5 Andhra Pradesh, a major player in the poultry industry, is planning to set up a Rs 300-crore research and development laboratory on diseases that dogged the animal husbandry sector.

The facility will come up at Pulivendula (Kadapa district), the home town of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, with an initial investment of Rs 100 crore.

It will have special focus on diseases reported in the poultry industry, according to Mr Mandali Buddha Prasad, Minister for Animal Husbandry.

He was addressing the inaugural of the three-day poultry exhibition being organised by Exhibition Advisory Committee (with representatives from the poultry industry) and Indian Poultry Equipment Manufacturers’ Association.

Keeping in mind the severe losses suffered by the industry whenever news on bird flu spread, the State Government is also planning to set up two laboratories in Hyderabad and Vijayawada.

Agriculture status

Realising the importance of poultry farming and pre-eminence of the State in the industry, Andhra Pradesh is considering a proposal to give the sector the status of agriculture.

The expo also attracted representatives from countries such as Oman and the US.

Mr Rajender, a legislator and poultry farmer, has demanded that the Government should announce minimum support price (MSP) for eggs and chicken.
