Accel Animation sets up motion capture studio


The company will use the motion capture studio for in-house projects and will also offer it on rent to other companies.

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 5 Accel Animation Studios, a division of Accel Transmatic Ltd, has set up a motion capture studio at its facility in Thiruvananthapuram.

Announcing this at a press conference, Mr S. Muralidharan, Chief Technology Officer, Accel Animation Studios, said that the motion capture studio involved an investment of approximately $1 million in technology and equipment alone. The motion capture equipment used in the studio is from the US-based Motion Analysis Corporation.

Motion capture is a method of digitally recording movements for use in entertainment, medical, sports and other applications.

The motion capture system installed in the Accel studio enables real-time full-body, face and hands motion capture, said Mr Tom D. Whitaker, Chief Executive Officer, Motion Analysis Corporation. The system is also portable, he added.

Accel Animation’s motion capture studio is located in the company’s studio in the animation special economic zone (SEZ) at the Kinfra Film and Video Park in Thiruvananthapuram, said Mr Muralidharan. Besides the 20,000 sq ft -studio in the animation SEZ, the company is also acquiring 2 acres of land for its own campus in the Kinfra Film and Video Park, said Mr T. Ravindran, Director, Accel Transmatic.

According to Mr Muralidharan, the company will use the motion capture studio for in-house projects and will also offer it on rent to other companies.

Animated series

Meanwhile, the company is working on an animated series based on the Thirukural and also on a project call Raju the Autorickshaw, he said. It is also looking at developing its own intellectual property, but only by 2009, he added. The company, which currently has 50 animators, plans to add another 100 over the next 12 months.
