Strategy Emami to expand in hair care segment Divya Trivedi Mumbai, Nov. 5 Producer of cosmetic goods and toiletries Emami Ltd is all geared up to introduce hair care products (shampoos, conditioners, creams, colorants and gels) in the next six months. The skin care sector hasn’t grown much in India against expectations, making it necessary for the group to foray into the hair care segment, Mr Mohan Goenka, Director, told Business Line. “Our Navratna oil is doing fairly good business and I think the time is right for expansion in the hair care sector, which looks promising,” he said. The company offers products under brands of Boroplus, Sona Chandi, Mentho Plus among others and aggressively markets its fairness creams – Fair & Lovely and Fair & Handsome for men and women respectively. The group is bullish on the men’s grooming segment and buoyed by the sales of Fair & Handsome cream (Rs 50 crore in the past year, according to Mr Goenka), is in the process of developing face washes, gels, etc as part of the men’s skin care portfolio. The company runs a chain of hospitals under the name AMRI in Kolkata and is to set up its third specialty hospital in Kolkata by next year. It will be exclusively for mother and child care with 250 beds on roughly half to two lakh sq ft of area, according to Mr Goenka. “When it comes to healthcare, most people go to South India for lack of better facilities in Kolkata. There is a huge scope for specialty hospitals to be started here.” Orthopaedic is one area where the city could improve greatly, but as of now, the company is not looking for expansions on that front, he said. Retail outletsEmami operates two formats of retail outlets in Kolkata – books/ stationery/ toys and pharmacy. It plans to add two book stores (Starmark) of 20,000 sq ft in Kolkata, of which the first is set to come up in January. More Stories on : Strategy | Personal Products
