2 insurers to offer heli-hop products

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad, Nov. 5 The helicopter ambulance service, launched by the Apollo-Deccan Aviation duo two months ago, has begun to attract non-life insurance companies.

Seeing good potential in this premium service, at least two insurance companies have shown interest to cover expenses incurred on the helicopter ambulance service by its clients.

Two insurance companies, including one private company, would come out with new products offering this component after March next, Ms Sangita Reddy, Executive Director (Operations) of the Apollo Hospitals group, told Business Line.

“We have done about 150 helicopter pick-ups so far in Delhi. In Hyderabad too, we are doing 2-3 pick-ups a month,” she said.

The Apollo group and Deccan Aviation signed a memorandum of understanding in September to offer the ambulance service.

The company believed that the patients, who needed this service, could cut down on expenditure significantly if insurance companies stepped in.

The heli-ambulance service would cost up to Rs 2 lakh or Rs 75,000 an hour. The entry of insurance companies could significantly bring down this figure.

Apollo DKV Insurance Company, the joint venture non-life insurance company between Apollo and DKV of Germany, has no immediate plans to include heli-hop component in its products.

The company, which filed for three products with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority, is expected to come out with its first product in one month.
