Traffic rises at Madurai airport

Madurai, Nov. 5 Madurai airport has witnessed an increase in air traffic and the number of passengers. In September, the number of passengers stood at 29,532 and flights at 654, against 18,518 and 427, respectively.

The number of passengers per annum increased from 1,58,673 in 2004-05 to 1,79,362 in 2005-06 and to 2,65,719 in 2006-07, Mr M. Suresh, Airport Controller, Airport Authority of India, Madurai Airport, told Business Line here.

Development works

Referring to development works at the airport, he said that preparations were on to operate bigger aircrafts. Parking bays are ready to handle three Airbus-300 and one Airbus-320. Work on the construction of a new integrated passenger terminal building at a cost of Rs 149.05 crore is to be taken up next month. This would include a centrally air-conditioned area of 17,536 sq.m. to cater to the needs of 500 passengers.

Mr Suresh further said that foreign airliners such as Air Arabia, Sri Lankan Airways were interested in operating flights to Madurai. There is scope to operate three flights a day to Gulf, Sri Lanka and Singapore, he added.
