NIFCO director wins award at Florex India

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore, Nov. 6

The Director and CEO of the Nilgiris Integrated Floritech Company Ltd (NIFCO), Mr H. N. Sivan, has bagged an award for his contributions to the country’s commercial floriculture industry.

The award was given away at Florex India 2007, an international floriculture event, which concluded recently at Pune. Mr Sivan later told Business Line that he was among the five selected for this award.

Cluster zones

The NIFCO is a cluster-based consortium of flower growers in the Nilgiris. The growers have developed 12 floriculture cluster-zones in the watershed areas of Ketti, Nanjanad, Thummannatti, Ooty, Gudalur, Kadanad, Kotagiri, Nedugula, Coonoor, Kundah, Emerald and Kookal for growing cut flowers such as carnations, liliums, gerberas and alstromerias by involving small farmers and women SHGs.

Indian Bank has funded this project to the tune of Rs 40 crore. Mr Sivan said the Dubai-based Kellett & Singleton Group (KSG) would be investing 20 per cent towards the project cost. “The infrastructure developments are underway for exporting cut flowers to West Asia and other countries,” he said.
