Production shortfall

Hit by disease, rains: Workers packing arecanuts in gunny bags at a farm near Kalpetta in Kerala’s Wayanad district. Production loss in white arecanut due to onslaught of fruit rot disease in plantations during monsoon and heavy rainfall has pushed the market prices of the commodity. The production loss is estimated to be around 40 per cent this season, while growers estimated it at 60 per cent.–
