Shimadzu of Japan mulls manufacturing unit in India

Wants to get a significant slice of the growing market

Shimadzu Corporation, a Japanese laboratory and industrial equipment major, is thinking of setting up a manufacturing base in India.

Given the huge growth witnessed in the pharma, chemical, biotech and life sciences sectors, India has the potential to absorb substantial number of lab instruments.

Shimadzu through its India subsidiary, wants to get a significant slice of the growing market, according to Mr Senya Imamichi.

Mr Imamichi, who is the Deputy Managing Director of Shimadzu Analytical (India) Ltd, the wholly owned subsidiary, told Business Line that the focus would be on pharma, life sciences and environment sectors in India.

Upbeat on India

With sales of over $40 million last year, Shimadzu is upbeat on the Indian market for analytical instruments, which was growing between 10 and 20 per cent in the past five years. “Our reading is that the market would be growing bigger by 2012,” he said. The estimated market size of India during 2006 was $843 million.

Shimadzu Analytical India has an evaluation lab in Mumbai and customer support centre with about 40 staff. It operates through four major distributors — Toshvin Analytical, Spinco Biotech, Swan Environmental and Amkette Analytics.

Indian clients

In Hyderabad to take part in the Analytica Anacon India 2007, Mr Imamichi said the parent company, which manufactures analytical (core biz), medical systems, industrial and aircraft equipment has manufacturing facilities in China, the US and UK outside of Japan.

In India, major clients for the company are pharma and chemical companies now. With pharma sector expected to double its market size in the next three years, we will not be surprised if the analytics market grows by 30 per cent also, he said.

In life science, environment and biotech the company is planning to bring in special products that meet the market demands. The evaluation lab in Mumbai will also strengthen its offer of pre-sales testing facilities and head count would be increased, he added.
