SIMA wants cut in power tariff

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Nov 7 The Southern India Mills Association (SIMA) has sought a reduction in power tariff in Tamil Nadu so as to provide a level playing field to the industries in the State.

It also wanted framing of a new textile policy in the State in tandem with the various schemes announced by the Centre for deriving full benefit.

In a statement issued here, Dr K.V. Srinivasan, Chairman, SIMA, welcomed the new industrial policy and said that to make the State a textile hub, the suggestions submitted by SIMA could be considered.

Equal priority to SME

He also wanted the Government to extend equal priority to the SMEs that provide the largest employment in the state to sustain its competitiveness.

The Government should reduce the power tariff on par with other States such as Andhra and Himachal Pradesh and with competing countries so as to sustain the growth of power intensive textile industry and avoid migration of investment to other states.

Subsidy

He felt the environment protection infrastructure subsidy announced by the Government for dedicated effluent treatment plants would encourage investments in modern process houses and thus strengthen the ‘weakest link of the textile value chain’.

Mr Srinivasan requested the Government to frame the new textile policy in tandem with the various schemes announced by the Central Government to enable the State to derive maximum benefits and become a favoured destination for investment in textile sector.
